Boko Haram kills 14 Soldiers, 11 Policemen, others in Yobe
No fewer than 14 soldiers and 11 policemen were killed on Monday evening in Buni Yadi in Gujba Local Government area of Yobe State by suspected Boko Haram members who laid siege on the town for over two hours.
The insurgents, who according to sources, started the massive attack on the town from 5pm, also set all security and military formations in the town ablaze.
In the attack that was on till about 7.30pm, the insurgents were said to have overpowered the security and military operatives in the area.
Residents of the town equally told journalists on the telephone on Tuesday that the insurgents also set on fire the area court and district head residence and office and few residential quarters.
Some security personnel, who did not want their names in print, told journalists on the telephone that 14 corpses of soldiers and 11 corpses of policemen were conveyed to Damaturu Specialist Hospital mortuary.
A resident of the area, one Malam Modibbo Kawu, said the insurgents drove into the town in Hilux vans on which they hoisted the sect’s flag, adding that the invaders moved straight to the military formation in the town and launched sustained attacks on it.
He said they told the residents not to be scared, telling them that “we are not here to attack you but came for reprisal against the security over the military attack on us at Alagarno last week.”
Kawu explained that the insurgents set the district head house on fire; burnt the local government secretariat and divisional police station as well as the military base in the area.
Some sources in the town however put the casualty figure higher.
Some of them who spoke with journalists on telephone claimed that that over 20 corpses of the military men about 20 corpses of policemen were conveyed to Damaturu.
A security source, who does not want his name in print, confirmed that 14 soldiers and 11 policemen were killed on Monday in the area, making it a total of 25 security operatives that were killed by the insurgents.
Monday’s attack brought to three the number of times the sect’s members would attack the area this year. Calls to the spokesman for the military in Yobe State, Lt. Eli Lazarus, for confirmation were not answered as of the time of filing this report.
