Bauchi workers strike hindering transition process – Gov-elect
The Bauchi State Governor-elect, Mohammed Abubaka, has lamented that the strike action embarked upon by the state civil servants, is affecting the work of the transition committee, calling on the workers to suspend the industrial action in the interest of the state.
The appeal was contained in a statement by the Deputy Governor-elect, Mr. Nuhu Gidado, on behalf of the Governor-elect, Mr. Mohammed Abubakar, copies of which were made available to newsmen on Tuesday in Bauchi.
Nigeria Labour Congress in Bauchi State embarked on an indefinite strike on Tuesday last week due to the inability of the state government to pay civil servants March and April salaries.
Abubakar said, “We wish to call on the NLC, TUC and JAC to note that the ongoing strike, resulting from the non-payment of salaries to workers, has become injurious to the transition process. It is important that the service personnel are available to drive a seamless transition process.”
The Governor-elect appealed to the striking workers to shelve the strike with a view to achieving a successful transition.
He also called on the state government to hasten the payment of all outstanding salaries to the workers.
“It is our understanding and belief that settlement of the entitlements of civil servants is essential to any government that is purposeful in its efforts to attain meaningful development,” he added.
Meanwhile, the Governor-elect has explained that the Bauchi re-branding project inauguration was sponsored by him while the project team worked on developing the strategic focus for Bauchi State free of charge.
“The incoming administration of Mohammed Abubakar,” the Governor-elect said, ” wishes to clarify the status of bauchi Rebranding Project with regards to its source of funding. The project is an initiative of the Governor-elect, nurtured from his emergence as the APC governorship candidate for Bauchi State and populated by individuals of impeccable standing, providing this vital service without any financial reward.
“The project team, which is not even on allowances, is indeed an asset to Bauchi State rather than a financial burden as insinuated in some quarters.”
