Baby Factory Uncovered in Ogun
Police in Ogun State yesterday uncovered a “baby factory” in Ajuwon, Ifo Local Government Area.
Detectives on a tip off reportedly stormed the location said to have 
been in operation for the past one year and in the process rescued eight pregnant young women.
The rescued young women according to the police were aged 16 to 25.
Two suspects, Angela Chigozie, 29, and Obinna Nduaga, 26, were arrested in the clamp down and taken to Ajuwon Divisional Police Headquarters for questioning.
One of the suspects, Mrs. Chigozie, at the press briefing while confessing to the crime told journalists, each baby was sold for N300, 000, adding that she ran the business with her husband, who is currently at large.
“The young women came to the factory pregnant, and where accommodated for the duration of the pregnancy till the babies were sold.
“We sell each baby for N300,000. If you have no (child), we sell the baby to you. Even barren women with their husbands patronise us. In the last one year, we (sold) five babies. I operate Divine Herbal Clinic alongside the baby selling business. I (was at) my village in Abia State before I relocated to Lagos (in 2013),” she said.
The second suspect, Mr. Nduaga, who is Mrs. Chigozie’s brother-in-law, in his own confession, said all he knew was that the pregnant women lived in the care of the first suspect and her husband. He, however, confirmed that people visited the factory to patronise it.
Mr. Nduaga, who was alleged to be the gateman of the facility, said he was also aware that some of the young women were brought in by some unidentified people and after the women had put to bed, buyers arrived to take away the babies.
One of the young women claimed that she was impregnated by her boyfriend who later abandoned her. She said she became dejected as she was an orphan and was brought to the factory by a man who she could not identify or locate.
The youngest of the victim, a 16-year-old, said she was a secondary school dropout from Akwa Ibom state. She said she got pregnant while hawking wares for an employer and was brought to Ajuwon by a stranger she could no longer identify. She said she wished to handover the baby, after delivery, to government to take care of.
The girl, who left school in JSS3, said she was still interested in going back and appealed to well-meaning Nigerians to come to her aid.
The Commissioner of Police, Ikemefuna Okoye, said the factory was uncovered following “reliable information from genuine members of the public.”
“Investigation is ongoing; the woman must have backers. It is inhuman; imagine a 16-year-old pregnant girl.
Also, from what I heard, if anyone delivered a dead baby, she would be asked to go without anything,” Mr. Okoye said.
He said that during the police raid, the suspects hid three of the pregnant victims in a wardrobe. One of the young women collapsed and was later revived in the hospital.
