Former Vice President of Nigeria, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar has berated the leaders of the nation for the increasing level of poverty in the country while also urging the people not to lose hope because of the current challenges facing the country.

Atiku said this in a New Year message released by his media office in Abuja and signed by his Head of Media, Malam Garba Shehu.

He advised the people to use the power of democracy wisely to bring about the desired change, and also urged those elected into offices to offer selfless service rather than enrich themselves.

Atiku encouraged all political leaders to embrace the spirit of tolerance and support each other, adding that people should not become enemies because of political differences.

He also said Nigerians should enter into the New Year with renewed optimism and register massively and collect their permanent voter cards so that they could vote for parties and candidates of their choice.

On the current slump in world oil prices, the statement said all leaders should cut down on extravagant lifestyles and share the burden with the ordinary citizens.
