Assembly Member Subsidizes Food Items For Abeokuta Residents
Hon. Lukmon Olajide Atobatele, who represents the people of Abeokuta South Constituency 1 in the Ogun State House of Assembly, has started subsidizing a number of food items so as to alleviate hunger and improve food security in his constituency. This innovative empowerment program he called “Ounje Atoba Egba” has allowed constituents to purchase essential food items at significant discounts, making everyday staples more accessible to families struggling with the rising cost of living.
Under the Ounje Atoba Egba program, key food items such as rice, beans, Garri, Maize, and Palm Oil are being sold at a 20% discount, allowing citizens to stretch their household budgets while ensuring they can still afford nutritious meals. Even more impressively, fresh produce such as tomatoes, onions, bell peppers, and “rodo” (scotch bonnets) are being offered at a 50% discount, providing a lifeline for families who depend on these ingredients for their daily meals.
Atobatele said his vision for the Ounje Atoba Egba program is not just to provide immediate relief but also to create a long-term sustainability within the constituency.
“The initiative is aimed at ensuring that no family goes to bed hungry, and that access to healthy, affordable food is available to all, regardless of income level. By reducing the prices of essential goods, the program helps to address the food insecurity that has become a growing concern for many households in the constituency”, Atobatele said
He noted that Ounje Atoba Egba represents a significant step forward in the fight against hunger in Abeokuta South Constituency 1, and that his vision would pave way for a future where access to affordable and healthy food is a reality for all residents.
“Through this initiative, the constituency is not only benefiting from discounted food prices but also from the empowerment that comes with knowing that their needs are being prioritized by their representative.”
The Alake of Egba Land, Oba (Dr) Adedotun Gbadebo, who was at the event commended Atobatele for the initiative and encouraged other people to emulate the gesture.
