Army Begins Investigation Of Assault Of Kaduna Journalist, MPs Move To Unravel Identify Of Those Responsible
Worried by the unruly behaviour of some soldiers at the closing ceremony of the 2017 Kaduna International Polo Tournament, Military Police (MP) Unit of the 1 Division of the Nigerian Army has swung into action to investigate, with a view to unraveling the identity of soldiers responsible.
On Tuesday, Captain C.D. Egbeta of the MP had visited the Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ), where he said he was there to investigate the incident, because the Army would not tolerate unruly behaviour from soldiers.
He had afterwards visited the polo club, scene of the unfortunate incident, with a view to finding clues that will lead to unraveling the soldiers who assaulted Kaduna Assistant Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN), Kaduna Chapter, Jacob Onjewu Dickson.
At the NUJ, he met the administratively officer, through whom he booked an appointment with the victim for Wednesday at the 1 Division to further gather information that would lead to identifying the soldiers responsible for the assault.
On his return to the NUJ from the meeting, Dickson, who is also the Online Editor of New Nigerian Newspapers said that he was asked to give details if what happened in writing.
“The Army officer in charge, Captain Egbeta asked me to write out details of what happened. He also asked if I got the name of any if those responsible but I told him their name tags were not on when the incident took place. He then told me that they would call on me when they get those involved, to identify them,” he said.
He further told newsmen that the Army Captain told him that their investigation would only be limited to involvement of soldiers, saying they would not interfere in the involvement of policemen.
It would be recalled that widespread condemnation trailed the alleged assault of Mr. Dickson on Saturday October 28, 2017 by Policemen and Soldiers while on official function at the Kaduna Polo Club.
