APC says Shock Defection of Osoba and Adesegun will not Affect their Electoral Chances
The leadership of the All Progressives Congress, APC, has said although they it is shocked by the defection of former governor of Ogun State, Olusegun Osoba, it would not affect its electoral chances.
The veteran politician defected with the deputy governor of the state, Segun Adesegun, the three senators representing the state and six members of the House of the Representatives to the Social Democratic Party, SDP.
Their defection reportedly stemmed from the tug of war between the former governor and the state governor, Ibikunle Amosun, as both want control of the soul of the state chapter of the APC. Adesegun, who is an ally of Mr. Osoba, has also accused the governor of starving his office of funds.
In a statement released by the National Publicity Secretary of APC, Lai Mohammed on Thursday, the party said: ”Yes, the defection of some our members will create some challenges for our party, but we will go back to the drawing board to re-strategize and redouble our efforts to retain the state in 2015.
”Every member of our party is important to its overall success, but none is more important than the party. Against this background, no member can hold the party to ransom.”
The Ogun state politicians join some of former prominent members of the APC, who have defected to other parties, including the Presidential candidate of the party in 2011, Nuhu Ribadu; current minister of Education, Ibrahim Shekarau; former Sokoto State Governor, Attahiru Bafarawa and former Foreign Affairs Minister, Tom Ikimi, all of whom have joined the ruling Peoples Democratic Party, PDP.
