The All Progressives Congress has inaugurated a 15-member National Convention Planning Committee to prepare grounds for the emergence of a new leadership for the party.

The inauguration which took place on Tuesday night was presided over by the National Secretary of the party, Alhaji Tijjani Tumsa.

In his remarks, chairman of the committee, who is also the Governor of Sokoto State, Alhaji Aliyu Wamakko said members of the committee were nominated based on their individual merits.

He also noted that the party leadership carefully selected committee members based on their track record of performance in previous tasks.

While expressing gratitude to the leadership of the party for finding them worthy to be saddled with the responsibility of organising the event, Wamako promised that committee members will deliver on their mandate.

He said, “This convention, as you are aware is very unique in many respects but most importantly, it is going to be the first convention of our great party, the All Progressives Congress, after the great merger process to choose officers to manage its affairs as we approach the 2015 general elections.

“Secondly, it is a widely held belief especially amongst our detractors that this convention will make or mar our great party.

“If you will recall, our detractors never gave us a chance to succeed at the merger stage, but to their disappointment we succeeded.

“Now that they expect us not to succeed, we must prove them wrong. We will present to the Nigerian people a world class, convention. And to do this, we must determined to make sacrifices, building on the experience of the past while placing party interest above self.”

He appealed to members of the committee to work together as a team. The governor used the occasion to announce that the committee has since commenced work considering the limited time available.

Wamako told the gathering that he and members of the committee have secured the Eagle Square as the venue for the convention scheduled to hold on June 13 and 14, 2014.

He also said the convention secretariat will soon be fully operational.

According to him, in order ensure smooth operations, various sub-committees will soon be created for experienced, firm and committed party members will be appointed to contribute their quota towards the success of the event.

Earlier, Tumsa charged members of the committee to justify the confidence reposed in them by the party.

It will be recalled that the party had at its recent National Executive Committee meeting, in Abuja, announced the formation of the committee. Wamako was named as Chairman, while Senator Chris Ngige is to serve as secretary.
