Angelina Jolie Bags Best Debut Figure in Her Career as Maleficent tops Box Office
Hollywood A+ list Actress, Angelina Jolie, has recorded he biggest box-office debut of her career after her latest movie, Disney’s twisted fairy tale “Maleficent” propelled to $70 million opening.
The PG-rated fantasy beat forecasts to easily top all films over the weekend though it had earlier been considered a risky endeavour for Disney, as there were fears it might turn away family audiences by retelling “Sleeping Beauty” from the villain’s perspective. The film emerged as a hit largely because of Jolie’s star power despite lackluster reviews from critics.
Seth MacFarlane’s Western comedy “A Million Ways to Die in the West” was overshadowed by “Maleficent”, opening in third place with a tepid $17.1 million despite an ensemble cast of Liam Neeson, Charlize Theron, Amanda Seyfried and MacFarlane himself.
Last weekend’s top film, Fox’s big-budget mutant sequel “X-Men: Days of Future Past,” dropped to second with $32.6 million, pushing its global cumulative total past $500 million already.
“Maleficent” has so far earned about $100 million internationally, contributing to Disney’s success in recent years with Alice in Wonderland’s debut at $116 million in 2010 and Oz the Great and Powerful’s debut at $79.1 million debut in 2013.
