The Akwa Ibom State government has announced it is trying to find new ways to increase its Internally Generated Revenue to cushion the effect of its steadily dwindling allocation from the Federation government.

The State Commissioner for Finance, Akan Okon, said this in Uyo on Friday while meeting with the state Permanent Secretaries and Heads of Extra-Ministerial Departments.

He said that it was imperative to exploit untapped revenue streams in the state as the government would not compromise on its obligations to the people.

The acting chairman of the State Internal Revenue Service, Anietie Edem, also said there was need for capacity building, incentives for staff and provision of work tools like vehicles for fieldwork, despite the shortage of funds.

The permanent secretaries asked that tax payment by legally enforced and also effective application of global information system for tax administration, harnessing of untapped revenue sources.
