An Ikeja High Court on Tuesday refused the bail application filed by Fred Ajudua.

Justice Oluwatoyin Ipaye while rejecting Ajudua’s bail ruled it that it lacked merit.

According to him, that Ajudua was suffering from a life-threatening ailment, as presented by his lawyer can not be a factor to consider in the bail application.

“The gravity of the allegation and the nature of punishment if found guilty are other factors to consider,” she said.

The judge made reference to Ajudua’s antecedents in separate criminal matters before another Lagos State High Court, where the defendant not only jumped bail but also allegedly interfered with the prosecution’s witness.

“In the circumstances therefore, I hold that the application for bail lacks merit and is hereby refused,” she ruled.

Ajudua have been dragged to court by Economic and Financial Crime Commission, EFCC for allegedly defrauding former Chief of Army Staff, Lt.-Gen. Ishaya Bamaiyi, of about $5.9m (about N1bn).

The case was adjourned to June 30.
